Animal Logic Sky Sydney
Op Zondag 1 Februari 2009 is ‘Animal Logic Sky’ , een ‘kroonluchter’ in de receptie van Animal Logic Studio’s in Sydney, gereed gekomen.
565 glasklompjes, allemaal met daarin aangebracht een LED. Samen hangend aan 1130 draadjes. (grootte glas gedeelte: diam. 220cm x hoog 60 cm. gemiddelde lengte van de draden (onder schuin dak) 4,65 meter)
Het is een levend en sprankelend object geworden op een druk kruispunt van looproutes pal voor de hoofdingang. De sprankelende uitstraling heb ik vooral kunnen bereiken door het glasklompje van binnen-uit te belichten. Daar komt bij dat door de drukte op de vloer, en de tocht van de voordeur het object ook voortdurend in beweging is. Onwillekeurig moet je even omhoog kijken als je er onderdoor loopt, het object trekt aan je blik. Blijf je stilstaan, kijken in het glas, dan voelt het alsof je naar binnen wordt gezogen. Vanuit verschillende locaties in het gebouw kijk je er bovenop en werkt ook het draden gedeelte mee in de magie van het geheel.
Animal Logic Sky, is een reactie op de volle drukke sterrenhemel van het zuidelijk halfrond. Het idee van een “Condensed Southern Sky” ontstond naar aanleiding van Zareh Nalbandian’s vraag; “we could do with a statement in our reception area”……… De gedachte dat het in Sydney zijn beslag zou krijgen en de herinnering aan de vele nachten onder die sterrenhemel daar, vaak in gezelschap van Zareh in de jaren zeventig deden langzaam de Animal Logic Sky in mijn hoofd ontstaan.

Situated in the busy intersection that is the reception area at Animal Logic, the ‘Animal Logic Sky’ is a lively, sparkling object that the eye can not help but be drawn to. The 565 hand cut pieces of recycled glass are all internally lit by LED lights, and suspended by a total of 1130 wires. The magic of this piece is a combination of the internal LED adding to the vitality and sparkle of the glass, and the air movement around it, from the thoroughfare, causing the glass pieces to sway gently. Standing underneath the 220cm wide x 60cm high sculpture, you feel as though you could be looking at a night sky, and yet from other angles the object can be viewed from above which shows the importance of the wires in the design. The inspiration for ‘Animal Logic Sky’ came from the abundance of stars visible in the Southern hemisphere sky, and a request from Zareh Nalbandian that “We could do with a statement in the Animal Logic reception area….”. The notion that it had to be done in Sydney, Australia, and the many memories of long nights under the southern sky, (in the 70’s often in Zareh’s company) slowly made the ‘Animal Logic Sky’ grow in my mind.
